The post-pandemic worlds do not always live up to our wild expectations – which led Peter Thiel, the co-founder of Paypal and one of Facebook's early investors, to say: " We were promised flying cars, and instead we got the 140-character tweet " – and progress is not made up of only disruptions.
The pandemic, however, has undoubtedly accelerated changes already underway, particularly in terms of digitalization and consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria, two areas that will be at the heart of the AFTE Days in the fall.
Digitalization is not only a concern for economists, but it is also transforming organizations, ways of working, and, of course, payments. As for ESG, it now has its rightful place alongside the traditional risk-return dichotomy of finance.
But we must also address the undesirable effects of an unprecedented economic depression, by managing walls of debt, by being ever more inventive in managing working capital needs, or by gaining efficiency with shared service centers, three themes, among many others, which will be developed during the plenary sessions and workshops of the AFTE Days.
